Karl Logan, MA Ed Admin , Portland Public Schools, Portland, OR
SBHCs can be immensely helpful to educators particularly if students are economically challenged or live in regions underserved by the traditional medical establishment. In partnership with schools, school-based health centers can have a profound effect on learning outcomes which include but are not limited to poor concentration in school, absenteeism, and disturbances of normal sequential cognitive development. The practical value of an SBHC from an educator's perspective will be advanced.

Learning Areas:
Planning of health education strategies, interventions, and programs

Learning Objectives:
Identify the value of SBHCs to the educational mission. Explain the precursors to educational risk.

Presenting author's disclosure statement:

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I was principal from 2005-2011 at Lane MS, in Portland OR, which has a school base health clinic. As Lane’s principal I collaborated with our school’s clinic and the county to ensure that our clinic served the entire Lane community and was a foundational pillar in our school, and not an add on.
