I have been asked to be a discussant for this presentation on the topic of leadership development for community health improvement due to my background and experience in public health leadership development as a director of a public health institute that emphasizes increasing the participants' leadership knowledge, skills, and commitment to leading and managing change; developing organizational; capacity; and building partnership that will contribute to eliminating health inequities by addressing the social determinants of health and by promoting healthy communities in healthy environment. This presentation will highlight how the California/Hawaii Public Health Leadership Institute helps train and prepare public health leadership in community health improvement initiative.

Identify opportunities for leadership development in their region and what they offer. Increase their understanding of the role of leadership development programs in strengthening individual skills and abilities and health system’s capacity. Gain insight into leadership challenges in shifting paradigms in public health. Develop a better understanding of the leadership skills, strategies and motivators needed to drive social change, health system transformation and engage the community.
