Universal Access and Health Care Reform: Challenges and Progress
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act expands health care access to millions of Americans previously uninsured or underinsured. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides unique opportunities for improving the health care system but also will also require innovative solutions to support the implementation of the law and expansion of health insurance coverage. This landmark legislation moves America closer to health care insurance coverage for all of its citizens, making the U.S. healthcare system more comparable to universal access provided in other countries. Thus studying models in other countries is also important as the United States implements the various components of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This session will feature several presentations related to universal access and health reform, specifically: measuring the uninsured population following health insurance reform, describing the impacts of a national health insurance policy outside of the United States, and developing value-based insurance packages and efficiency-based payment models.
Session Objectives: Describe characteristics of insured and uninsured populations after implementation of health reform
Describe the importance of safety net programs for uninsured
Described behaviors of health care providers after implementation of social health insurance
Identity evidence-based health care services that are cost-effective and improve health outcomes
Describe a new payment model for improving pay-for-performance system
