Oral
This session explores cutting edge research on risk factors and health outcomes associated with sexual violence and intimate partner violence (IPV) in various geographic and cultural contexts. These geographic and cultural contexts include research among Jordanian women, sexual violence survivors in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, women in the United States, and African-American and African-Caribbean women living in the U.S. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The topics discussed in this session include research on the stigmatization of survivors of sexual violence, the relationship between disordered eating and sexual violence and the role of social norms. Also discussed will be research on associated adverse health outcomes including unintended pregnancy, unmet need for family planning, and late entry into prenatal care.
Session Objectives: Compare and contrast the issue of sexual violence/intimate partner violence (IPV) in various geographic and cultural contexts. Identify risk factors for IPV. Describe the relationship between sexual violence/IPV and the adverse health outcomes of unintended pregnancy, unmet need for family planning, and late entry into prenatal care.
