Title: Factors that influence participation of African Americans and other minorities in research studies: A review of the literature
Objective: To understand issues that impact participation of minority groups in research studies and to describe the elements that result in successful recruiting of African American's into research studies Design: A systematic literature review Methods: We conducted electronic searches from 1995 - 2011using PubMed, Science Direct, and CINAHL to identify studies that articulated minority participation in research studies and described recruiting strategies. In addition we reviewed studies that described factors, challenges, barriers and facilitators influencing the participation of African Americans and other minority groups in research. Results: Adverse influences on research participation include general distrust of the system, historical abuses, less education, income, access, adherence to folk medicine practices, racism and inadequate or ineffective recruiting practices. Positive influences on research participation include established trust, an African American provider, ease of access, compensation, relatives with the disease of interest, and an established presence in the community
