The Quebec Health Survey of High School Students 2010-2011 (QHSHSS) was carried out at the request of the Ministry of Health and Social Services to help in the priority monitoring of adolescents, a segment of the population for which data are lacking or poorly covered. Data will be used to track a number of lifestyle habits, physical and mental health characteristics, social environments and psychosocial behaviors, including risk of school dropout.

Adolescence is a time when many lifestyle-risk behaviors are established which may lead to greater morbidity and mortality in adulthood. It is also a time when physical and mental wellbeing, psychosocial behaviors and family, school and peer environments play an important role in school success.

The survey was conducted from November 2010 to May 2011 on 63,196 students in 470 public and private high schools across Quebec. Two sampling frames were used. The first was the Ministry of Education database used to randomly select schools for each grade level. The second was formed by contacting principals of the selected schools and obtaining the list of classes in each grade level. A two-stage stratified cluster sampling plan was used to produce a representative sample of students from grades 7 to 11 at the both provincial and regional levels. In class, students filled out a computerized questionnaire on small laptops. The overall weighted, cascaded response rate was 88%.

Results are currently pending; a two-volume report will be published in late 2012 and early 2013.
