Abstract-Quality of life of caregivers and families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder which affects an individual's ability to function in daily life. Caring for a child with ASD may be demanding and daily challenges can significantly impact the caregiver's and/or family's quality of life. Quality of life is a subjective and multidimensional concept frequently used as a tool in research and as a guide for policy making. This presentation provides a systematic review synthesis of the literature concerning quality of life and the measurement of quality of life for caregivers and families of children with an ASD diagnosis from birth to 22 years of age. Caregiver and family quality of life measures and their relationship to ASD level of severity, behavioral challenges, demographic information, social support, and parental attitudes were explored. Results of this review indicate that problem behaviors and caregiver stress have a negative impact on quality of life, while economic status and social support have a positive effect. Quality of life measures were assessed for their comprehensiveness in addressing the important issues of caregivers and families. Quality of life as an outcome measure is important in guiding research, service delivery and intervention for children with ASD.
