258729 Warriors for Peace: Resilient Young Men and educating peers and their communitiesTuesday, October 30, 2012
: 8:55 AM - 9:15 AM
In Alameda county, youth in Oakland face numerous issues that have effects on their health. In a recent news article, Alameda county was ranked second in California for the highest rates of murders of youth.
Concerned about their communities, young men of color came together to respond and tell a different story of Oakland. Through video recording and learning counseling and coping skills, the young men of various ethnicities showcase their resiliency as “Warriors for Peace.” The Spot's “Warriors for Peace” is an after-school program that provides a creative outlet for learning video editing skills. More importantly, the program provides a place of peer education for the young men to teach other men their resiliency skills. The presentation will revolve around their videos and their emotional growth as young leaders in the community. The program is a positive representation of how youth can transform themselves and their peers in Oakland. The transformation is also felt with the facilitators and counselors involved as they grow and learn from the resilient young men.
