260899 Housing and health in léogâne, haiti: A photovoice investigationTuesday, October 30, 2012
The conditions of housing and health in Léogâne, Haiti were compromised as a result of the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010 with 90% of all buildings destroyed and over 20 thousand residents injured or killed. Although international aid organizations have introduced several projects to improve health and housing within the local region, few research studies have investigated the Haitian perspective on current health conditions or sought solutions to health problems through community participation. The objective of this study is to determine root health problems facing residents of Léogâne using community-based participatory research. This qualitative research study investigates the current housing and health conditions and root causes of associated illnesses through the lens of nursing students living in Léogâne. Twenty-two residents participated in the photovoice project that incorporated photography, interviews and focus groups to identify community characteristics and health implications negatively affecting residents. Results indicate that the external home environment, inadequate sanitation, excessive pollution and sub-standard water conditions are significant themes for health improvements among research participants.
Results Participants contributed over 400 photographs pertaining to housing and health conditions in Léogâne. Participants identified the themes of the external home environment: excessive garbage, inadequate sanitation, stagnant water, lack of toilets and lack of clean water sources as the most significant problems negatively affecting health in Léogâne. Participants further underscored the relationship between key themes and community illness, specifically addressing the negative health consequences within the neighborhood population at the present time.
