Since the WHO released the Global Alcohol Strategy in 2010, there has been enhanced attention to alcohol problems and solutions at the international level. WHO has released a global status report on alcohol and health and strategies on reducing the noncommunicable diseases. Moreover, the UN held a special General Assembly session on noncommunicable diseases which recognized alcohol as a major contributing factor and confirmed evidence-based interventions. In addition, leaders met in Thailand at the global alcohol policy conference to report on developments in carrying out the global strategy at the national and local levels. The presentation will highlight key challenges and developments which add to the armamentarium of policy advocacy tools.
