Abstract: Community college populations are a diverse group. Among those identifying as community college students are unemployed adults re-entering the educational institution of higher learning. In a general survey conducted by a community college school-based health clinic [SBHC] in Oakland, CA, a vast majority of its patients were reported as uninsured. Through a collaborative health initiative led by Asian Health Services [AHS], Peralta Community College District [PCCD], and the Alameda County Healthcare Services Agency, community college students attending PCCD can attain integrative health care services based on an affordable student health fee. As patient navigators act as the hub to healthcare and community resources, community college students are offered comprehensive and culturally competent services beyond what is expected from an SBHC. Although the Peralta Wellness Center [PWC] is still a new concept for many PCCD students, those who have accessed the prevention and wellness services at this SBHC are satisfied with the care and information received by its providers. It is through the promotion of equal access to health care that these community college students are instilled with the importance of maintaining a positive well-being throughout their lifespan. As the cost of health care services rise and the number of insured community college students decline, it is recommended that community health centers and institutions of higher learning continue to form partnerships grounded in the conviction that affordable health care services should be readily available for its diverse student population.
