264811 Changes in reporting of intimate partner violence prevalence and help seeking behaviors in the context of new national policies: The case of Peru, 2004-2008Monday, October 29, 2012
This study investigates the changes in the prevalence of intimate partner violence and help seeking behaviors of women in Peru from 2004 to 2008. The sample of women for this study was obtained from the Demographic Health Survey. Results indicate a small, but statistically significantly, decline in the prevalence of IPV between the years 2004 and 2008. However, these results should be interpreted with caution, as there is currently no evidence to support that public policy has resulted in increased reporting or decreased IPV experiences for women due to the lack of available data on the implementation and effectiveness of current policies. Results indicate that implementation of existing policies at the national and at the departmental level should be prioritized.
By the end of the session, the participant will be able to describe the prevalence of intimate partner violence and the help seeking behaviors of women in Peru over a 5 year period. By the end of the session, the participant will be able to discuss how national policies as well as social and cultural factors may be responsible for differences in intimate partner violence prevalence and help seeking behaviors across the different departments (regions) of Peru.
