Efforts to improve health outcomes of Native Hawaiians have focused on developing and implementing culturally-tailored health education curriculum. The role of the community is integral in developing meaningful health education programs. PILI ‘Ohana Lifestyle Intervention and Partners in Care are two examples of community developed health education programs. PILI ‘Ohana Lifestyle Intervention is a weight-loss and weight-loss maintenance lifestyle program based on the Diabetes Prevention Program Materials. Partners in Care is a diabetes self-management program based on national guidelines. These two health education programs gathered community input through informal interviews, focus groups, and surveys. The information gathered was then incorporated into program content, design and delivery. Community facilitators delivered the curriculum to the community participants. Their involvement with the implementation phase assisted with recruitment and retention of participants. The programs were evaluated through focus groups and satisfaction surveys. The information gathered helped to refine the curriculum further.
