Policymakers and the public have focused increasing attention in recent years on the mental health needs of our nation's veterans. This attention has resulted in a greater understanding and recognition of the mental wounds of war, including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, traumatic brain injury, and suicidal ideation. This presentation will discuss some of the key mental health challenges facing veterans across the lifespan and provide an overview of several important public health policies that have been enacted to address the mental health needs of veterans. In addition, new policy proposals will also be discussed. Finally, examples of effective collaboration on veterans mental health issues between federal entities, the mental health community, the veterans service community, and policymakers will also be highlighted.
