Latina women suffer from a high rate of obesity and obesity-related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Health information alone does not result in positive behavior change; individuals need to be highly motivated and benefit from social support; physical appearance is a great motivator for women of all cultures. Objective: To develop an obesity prevention program specific for Latina women to promote positive dietary and physical activity behavior changes.

Method: The three hour “Health Spa” intervention was designed to be culturally and linguistic appropriate for Latinas. It introduces the concept of “Healthy is Beautiful” by linking physical appearance to a healthy lifestyle. The program combines nutrition education with spa-like activities, such as facials and hand scrubs made with ethnic fruits and vegetables: avocadoes, papayas, tomatoes. Participants learn about the impact of sugar and different types of fat on their skin and weight; healthy cultural foods are encouraged. They learn the importance of exercise and weight management to reduce the risk of developing PCOS, whose symptoms may include excess facial hair, acne, hair loss and infertility. Finally, participants create individualized behavior change action plans and are later contacted to provide long-term accountability and support to meet their goals. Results: 87% of participants reported at least one positive behavior change at four week follow-up. Participant's indicated wanting the program available to friends and family members. Conclusion: Workshop generates cultural pride, self-esteem and provides the information and motivation needed for dietary and lifestyle changes, reducing the risk of obesity.
