This session will discuss the key roles and responsibilities that boards of health have related to environmental health and the improvement of core environmental health services. Using the newly published Local Board of Health Environmental Health Primer, 2nd Edition, this session will outline how local public health governance strengthens environmental health services. It will highlight key recommendations for boards of health identified in the Environmental Health Primer. Attendees will learn how boards of health can fulfill the core functions of public health by addressing local environmental health concerns, how to work with boards of health on environmental health issues, the benefits of training board of health members in environmental health topics, and the top questions and considerations related to environmental health services and public health governance. Attendees will come away with concrete ways that health officers, health department staff, boards of health, and other local policymakers can collaborate on environmental health issues. This session will also tie these objectives to larger public health prevention initiatives, such as Healthy People 2020 and the National Prevention Strategy, outlining the ways that local public health governance is linked to the larger public health community.
