Saturday, October 27, 2012 : 1:05 PM - 3:05 PM

Kathlynn Northrup-Snyder, PhD, RN, CNS , Community Health Concepts, Dallas, OR
The purpose of this activity is to provide participants the opportunity to gain practice and deeper understanding of the guiding skills related to OARS and developing discrepancy. Individual feedback and focus allows for personal questions and application to professional practice area. Active practice of each of these skills will provide a foundation in OARS. Additional work will be done on learning how to develop discrepancy to help others understand where their ambivalence is created. This practice will use the OARS skills, understanding of health behavior theory, and other tools to develop discrepancy. Then using reflective listening skills, the participant can practice evoking the “clients” thoughts about their reasons to change or to sustain their behavior. Knowledge of either will help the “client” to explore options for change. Each participant is encouraged to explore all of these skills to the depth they are comfortable and this session is individualized for this purpose.

Learning Objectives:
•Demonstrate ability to differentially use elements of OARS. •Discuss methods to develop discrepancy. •Demonstrate ability to apply beginning skills to develop discrepancy.
