269696 Exploring the different levels of MI skills related to “client” readiness to change

Saturday, October 27, 2012 : 3:20 PM - 4:10 PM

Kathlynn Northrup-Snyder, PhD, RN, CNS , Community Health Concepts, Dallas, OR
The purpose of this activity is to give the participant the opportunity to explore the differences between working with clients in the ambivalence phase of change versus those who are ready to move toward commitment. Time will be given for additional practice on evoking change talk from the client and determining which tools from the discussion on behaviors and Motivational Interviewing are effective for clients seen in individual practice. Additional practice will be done on concepts for eliciting change talk related to understanding the client Desire, Ability, Reasons, and Need for change and their level of Commitment (DARN-C). There will be time for questions and exploration of best fit for MI in different settings and populations.

Learning Objectives:
•Differentiate the strategies used in the different levels of MI. •Demonstrate ability to apply foundational MI techniques while exploring DARN-C in clients. •Differentiate between theoretical concepts of change and MI as a guiding counseling style.
