The NIEHS-funded Western Region Universities Consortium has provided training for workers in the field of hazardous materials and waste for the past few decades. Consortium members at UCLA-LOSH and UC Berkeley LOHP have developed tools for training limited literacy workers, adapted materials for small electroplating businesses and trained workers for jobs in the construction, environmental remediation and green jobs arena. These include training day laborers in landscaping techniques that conserve water, using highly visual approaches to ladder safety, preventing falls and heat illness, and integrating green chemistry principles in Minority Worker Training Programs. Presenters will describe tools for training limited literacy and non-English speaking workers and will discuss successes and challenges in implementing programs that lead to worker empowerment.

Learning Areas:
Occupational health and safety

Learning Objectives:
Describe specific tools and approaches to educate workers with limited literacy skills. Demonstrate how these tools, techniques and approaches have been used in health and safety training and job training programs.
