Natalie Thanh Hua, DPM Candidate , California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University, Oakland, CA
With 49.9 million or 16.3 percent of the US population uninsured, there exist many models of clinics providing basic health care to these individuals. One such model is the student-run free clinic which is managed by health professional students and overseen by licensed health care providers. There are over 110 such student-run clinics nation-wide that have provided on-going medical services to their patients. However, there is little to no literature discussing the work of student-run clinics that provide podiatric medical care to the uninsured population and its' impact to society. This presentation sheds light on the free student-run Podiatry Clinic at Clínica Tepati, in Sacramento, California. The presentation analyzes the clinic organization, the benefits to patients and students, as well as future possibilities and outlook.
