CKD is a common, potentially harmful threat to the health of the U.S. public. Detection and prevention strategies can decrease the burden of CKD by inhibiting or delaying outcomes such as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), disability, and death. Currently U.S. lacks a systematic CKD surveillance. The goal was to address prevention of CKD and its consequences through the development of a web-based surveillance system and track the progress of national efforts in a timely manner. Using a comprehensive process, we developed and prioritized CKD broad topics and specific measures, systematically evaluated data sources (for representativeness, acceptability, data availability, data quality, defined denominator, feasibility, sensitivity and positive predictive value, stability, and timeliness) and have conducted pilot testing. A publicly available CKD surveillance system website displaying national CKD data and trends will be launched in October 2012. The CKD surveillance system contains data on six broad topics: burden of CKD, awareness of CKD, risk factors for CKD, consequences of CKD, processes and quality of care for CKD, and healthcare system capacity for CKD. The website allows the user to obtain information on these topics in graphical and tabular formats in general population, healthcare system, children, persons with diabetes, and minorities. The system provides a comprehensive source of data on earlier stages of CKD in the United States. We anticipate that the website will become a standard source for reliable and accurate CKD information and serve to raise awareness and stimulate action among communities, health professionals and policy makers.
