Linda Bergonzi King, MPH , Center for Healthcare Solutions, Yale New Haven Health System, New Haven, CT
According to the W.H.O. definition, palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. The Yale New Haven Health System Center for Healthcare Solutions (YNHHS-CHS) has developed a workshop for the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) that provides information and instruction to nurses and social workers on the significance of palliative and end-of-life care for cancer patients and their families. The information that is included in the seminar is based on the needs identified in the Final Report - Assessing the Unmet Needs of Healthcare Providers Using a Web-based Survey, January 4, 2010, by the Yale University School of Nursing, the Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care and the Connecticut Cancer Plan 2009-2013. Video vignettes were produced to complement the lecture portion of the workshop. The videos portray the cohesiveness of the palliative care team within the context of a patient/family meeting.
