The JHU National Children's Study Center used Video Voice as a participatory video training technique that put video cameras in the hands of eight Neighborhood Ambassador community members. Video Voice essentially means giving a ‘voice' to community participants, allowing them to explore particular issues and topics visually and verbally in a way that may be more effective than using words alone. This enabled them to explore, document and think critically about what they and the communities they represent believe is important to childhood development in Montgomery County, while providing a form of creative expression. The product of this endeavor, “It's About Health: Voices from Montgomery County, MD”, features the process and the benefits of using the technique in this format to enhance the understanding of community outreach staff. The film also provides a visual media tool that highlights what health means to Montgomery County residents and the concerns and priorities of local parents when it comes to growing healthy children.
