Latino communities in the United States (US) have been disproportionately affected by HIV, and Latino gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) carry an even greater burden. In the US, Latino gay men and MSM have twice the rate of HIV infection of white MSM, yet to date, no intervention has been rigorously evaluated and found effective at reducing sexual risk among Latino gay men and MSM in the US.

Our community-based participatory research (CBPR) partnership has developed 2 interventions designed to reduce sexual risk among Latino gay men and MSM that are currently being implemented and evaluated. One is a community-level intervention based on lay health advising (LHA) that harnesses the existing social networks of Latino gay men and MSM and the natural ways they support one another. The other intervention is a multi-session small-group intervention. Both interventions use dynamic and interactive activities and games, group discussion, and skills building exercises. The interventions also include 5 DVD vignettes that our partnership developed. These discreet vignettes are embedded within the intervention and serve as triggers for discussion and provide role modeling.

Negotiating Condom Use is one of the vignettes. The vignette is designed to influence opinions and dispel myths about condom use; demonstrate proper condom use and successful condom-use negotiation between 2 Latino gay men; and serve as a trigger for discussion among intervention participants about sex, sexuality, intimacy, masculinity, and safety. The vignette is particularly innovative because it incorporates publicly available educational material (translated into Spanish) featuring two well-known adult film actors.

(This vignette has been edited for a broad public health audience and English-language subtitles have been added for the APHA Film Festival.)
