Nationally, emergency departments play a vital role in our health care system and act as the provider of last resort for millions of under-insured and uninsured patients who lack adequate access to medical and dental services. National and state data sources provide sufficient evidence to document the burden of emergency department use for nontraumatic dental condition visits in the United States. But the care provided for NTDCs in EDs is temporary and lack the opportunity for care continuity. NTDC visits in ED are a public health concern because of the associated program, policy and cost implications.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to describe the current state of the literature on nontraumatic dental condition visits (NTDC) in emergency departments (ED) in the United States. Participants will be able to identify gaps in the current literature on NTDC visits in ED in the United States. Participants will be able to describe the sociodemographic factors associated with NTDC visits in EDs in the United States.
