272891 Innovative strategies in unintended pregnancy prevention, Part 2Monday, October 29, 2012
: 11:30 AM - 11:50 AM
Current policies at the federal level impact the provision of sexual reproductive health (SRH) care in addition to a lack of defined SRH competencies for providers. Under the Affordable Care Act, policies should move to include contraception as a component of preventive health care. The surgeon general has highlighted SRH as one of eight areas to focus prevention efforts. Nurses, first-line health care providers can be trained to implement preventive services with women. These services include primary unintended pregnancy interventions, contraceptive management, reinforcement and support, and health education and promotion. This session will provide practical implementation strategies that support the education, training and deployment of staff nurses to preventive health services to women of reproductive age. Consistent with several Institute of Medicine reports, nurses will practice to the full extent of their licensure and will be provided with an implementation model and a road map for practice. This session, in partnership with the other 3 panel sessions should provide nurses with information to implement primary prevention interventions in diverse settings.
