Tuesday, October 30, 2012 : 4:50 PM - 5:10 PM

Sophia Serda, PhD , Region 9 | Superfund Division, US Environmental Protection Agency, San Francisco, CA
A case study will be used to illustrate how the US EPA Superfund Program works with community members in “planning and scoping” the exposure assessment of a National Priorities List (NPL) site. Community knowledge can help scientists better characterize a site, by informing EPA of site history. Additionally, community knowledge on unique exposure pathways can inform the exposure assessment, leading to a more accurate characterization of risk to site contaminants.

Learning Areas:
Environmental health sciences
Program planning
Public health or related laws, regulations, standards, or guidelines

Learning Objectives:
- Explain how community stakeholders can help scientists more accurately characterize risk in site-specific risk assessment - Describe how community stakeholders can help policy-makers make effective risk management decisions
