Approaches to disease and illness prevention should include those methodologies that surpass addressing individual risk behaviors. The social determinants of health put into perspective the social and economic conditions under which people are born, grow, live, and work (Commission on the Social Determinants of Health 2008). This presentation will review gender as a key social determinant of health that influences socially-constructed characteristics and roles that impact individual health behavior.
