This presentation will review essential elements gender-responsive programming. These are programs that take into account the needs of woman and men that are rooted in biological and gender differences. There are various levels of gender-responsive programming that are summarized within the conceptual framework known as the gender-integration continuum. This continuum is based on a framework developed by Geeta Gupta, Daniel Whelan and Keera Allendorf of the International Center for Research on women and the Interagency Work Group on Gender of U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The work of these and other international public health experts recognize the impact of gender inequality on HIV risk and have demonstrated the importance of gender-integration in HIV programs.
