Infectious diseases and Tuberculosis are among the strategic priorities defined by the United States-Mexico Border Health Commission. However and given the characteristics contained in the Border Region which includes high level of migration flows and trade exchange, a big diversity of demographic, socioeconomic and health status characteristics of population, the approach to control TB and HIV-AIDS and Syphilis represents a big challenge for both countries. Recent documentation is adding evidence to the situation of TB indicating that number of cases is increasing. In the case of HIV-ADIS the lack of systematic information probably is under covering this problem in the Border Region. Thus, the PAHO/WHO office in El Paso has supported, in agreement with countriesx mandates, initiatives leading to better understand these problems and the way to resolve them. For TB, PAHO/WHO launched a report in 2010 with some recommendations including among others for instance to define the border region as a unique epidemiological entity in order to better organize the surveillance and care for this disease. Other project developed is the initiative to eliminate vertical transmission of HIV-AIDS and elimination of congenital syphilis which through the reorientation of health services and the use of approaches based on community support is implemented by the Health Secretariat in Ciudad Juarez. PAHO/WHO mission is to continue making advocacy for the integrated approach for these diseases.
