The U.S. and Mexico have a rich history of formal transnational cooperation in environmental public health issues along the border between the two countries. However, the transnational border organizations and systems within which this cooperation takes place have received limited attention. This presentation focuses on identifying the stages of transnational cooperation in environmental public health along the U.S.-Mexico border. It analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of each stage using community organization and community building constructs such as legitimacy, capacity, social capital, organizational structure, and resources. It also proposes a new model of cooperation for the coming years.
