This presentation will describe an ongoing, collaborative community-academic partnership focused on examining and addressing community-identified environmental health concerns. Spatial relationships between selected physical and social environmental determinants (eg. access to healthcare and healthy food choices) and the health and well being of the affected community (eg. chronic illness and cancer risk) were examined to validate perceived residential concerns. Additionally, community capacity was assessed to identify environmental health associated capacity measures, as well as, determine the feasibility of community-proposed strategies focused on cancer prevention and the enhancement of overall health and well-being in this predominantly, minority community located in close proximity to an industrial shipping port.

Presenting author's disclosure statement:Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have worked on several NIH funded environmental health research projects conducted in vulnerable minority communities. My recent research interests involve the use of community-based participatory research (CBPR) to assess environmental exposures and associated health risk in affected communities. More importantly, I have developed an understanding of the importance of working with communities to address their perceived concerns, as well as, the need to build and maintain a trust of the partnering community.
