The North Dakota Public Health Association has planned and implemented a “Public Health Day at the Legislature” designed to provide advocates with opportunities to interact with state legislators on a variety of public health issues. Advocacy training held in partnership with other health professional organizations provided advocates with skills necessary to support legislation such as public health funding and maintenance of tobacco prevention funding.

Identify successful strategies for engaging policymakers on public health issues. Describe the planning process used by an association to teach members advocacy skills.
