Complete Streets policies are proven to have positive effects on a community's health, traffic, and economy. As an APHA Power of Policy grantee, the Manatee County Health Department in Florida is now developing guidelines for a Complete Streets policy, with implementation planned for early 2013. This new policy initiative aligns with Manatee County's existing CDC ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and EnVironmental changE) objectives relating to policy and environmental change for public health. Health Department employees have collaborated with a variety of interested community groups and non-traditional public health partners to identify priorities for creating Complete Streets guidelines. This session will inform the audience about Manatee County's current progress in developing Complete Streets policy recommendations, lessons learned thus far in the process, and future plans through the end of the APHA funding period and beyond.

Learning Objectives:
Describe the importance of Complete Streets Policies for public health. Explain Manatee County’s approach to developing a Complete Streets policy. Analyze successes and lessons learned after six months of research and planning.
