The Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) received funds from the National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII) to support department wide performance improvement and accreditation efforts. The Performance Improvement and Accreditation Team has been able garner leadership support, collect baseline date on performance management and accreditation readiness, and leverage department and community expertise to begin implementing a performance management system through public health accreditation.

Learning Objectives:
1) Describe the impact of leadership support and guidance on starting a performance management system. 2) Identify examples of successful performance improvement activities and determine adaptability in other health departments.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have served as the Performance Improvement Manager and Accreditation Coordinator for the Houston Department of Health and Human Services since August 2011. Our success stories include integrating core competencies into employee performance plans, training over 80% of the health department in public health accreditation, and actively implementing four quality improvement projects.
