Doak Bloss, BA , Ingham County Health Department, Lansing, MI
Since 1998, Ingham County Health Department has used facilitated dialogue to engage in new relationships with the community and create the collective will for policy change in such areas as access to health care, community health navigators, and the adoption of a social justice framework for public health practice. The presenter will describe the benefits and challenges of using a specific dialogue methodology (Technologies of Participation, from the Institute for Cultural Affairs) for this purpose.

Learning Objectives:
1) Describe the basic elements of a facilitated dialogue methodology as applied in a community health context. 2) Differentiate between the application of this methodology to a conventional planning process and to a process that intentionally addresses issues of social justice and health equity. 3) Assess the appropriateness of adopting a “values-free” facilitation approach in applying dialogue methodology to public health policy development.
