Background: Healthy People 2020 provides a comprehensive set of 10-year, national goals and objectives for improving the health of Americans. The initiative contains 42 topic areas with approximately 1,200 objectives. Within Healthy People 2020, a subset of objectives, called Leading Health Indicators (LHIs), has been selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them. Healthy People 2020 and the LHIs have adopted a social determinants of health (SDOH) framework, recognizing the range of personal, social, economic and environmental factors that influence individual and population health. Addressing these determinants is key to improving population health, eliminating health disparities, and meeting the overarching goals of Healthy People 2020. Objectives/Purpose: This presentation will explain how the LHIs were selected and are being used as a communication tool to raise awareness and drive action. Methods: The Healthy People 2020 monthly series, Who's Leading the Leading Health Indicators?, showcases states, communities, or organizations that are addressing the LHIs using a SDOH approach. The series includes an e-bulletin, webinar, and social media activities via Twitter and LinkedIn. Results: An average nearly 20,000 individuals and organizations participate in the LHI series each month.
