The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are en evidence-based set of policies and practices known to increase breastfeeding rates at hospital, city, and country-levels. Despite significant efforts, implementation of the Ten Steps has been slow in the United States. In the past decade, state-level organizations have launched programs to support hospitals in the process. The state programs have had varying levels of success, but progress has been impeded by working in silos. The states with the strongest infrastructures in place are burdened with numerous inquiries for help. Other states have little time and money, and need evidence-based strategies for maximizing the impact with these few resources. Just as many of us are benefitted by collaborating with colleagues, and hospitals benefitted by partnering and mentoring other hospitals, not surprisingly, so our state programs! Participants of this session will learn how the Interstate Collaborative is working to serve this purpose.

Review the history of implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding in the US; Introduce the Interstate Collaborative for Widespread Implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding; Summarize Collaborative recommendations for intervention, monitoring and evaluation, and research; Outline the next actions to be taken toward refining, disseminating, advocating for, implementing and testing the recommendations on the state and national stage; and Highlight three models of state-based Ten Steps implementation programs that represent the diversity of approaches
