3019.0 Patient Navigation, Peer Navigation, and Cancer Prevention and Control

Monday, October 29, 2012: 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Oral
Patient navigation services are intended to address barriers to cancer screening and treatment and ultimately improve cancer screening and care outcomes among vulnerable populations. This session will address the principles of patient navigation programs, patient navigation needs, the role of patient navigation in facilitating timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment, and barriers to cancer care among patients receiving navigation services.
Session Objectives: Participants will be able to discuss: 1) whether existing programs for breast cancer patient navigation align with a framework of existing principles; 2) health literacy barriers, patient navigation needs, and community resources among rural cancer patients; 3) the results of a large, six-city study which found that patient navigation leads to increased rates of timely, definitive diagnosis among Latinas with abnormal breast cancer screening; and 4) the impact of health-related legal needs on timely care among women with abnormal cancer screening results who have received patient navigation services.
