The presentations of this session addresses various issues of personal assistance, social support, and caregiving including, state training for caregivers of older adults and people with physical disabilities, independent living and social support among chronically-Ill Puerto Rican elderly, using patient navigation to improve cancer treatment satisfaction among elderly latinos in Houston, as well as the caregiving intensity and health impacts.
Session Objectives: 1. Describe the California Personal and Home Care Aide State Training (PHCAST). 2. Assess the social support of Puerto Rican older adults with chronic illness living in a poor urban community. 3. Discuss healthcare reform policies that may support patient navigation efforts in elderly populations. 4. Discuss potential strategies to target at-risk caregivers to mitigate the effects of high-intensity caregiving on the caregivers.
