5215.0 Breast cancer screening, treatment, and survival in underserved populations

Wednesday, October 31, 2012: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Oral
Breast cancer disparities in incidence, progression, and mortality have been noted in minority, rural, and underserved populations. Sources of these disparities include access to care, health insurance type, and the lack of minority representation in clinical trials. In this oral session, panelists will discuss strategies to increase access to mammography screening, identify preferred sources of health-related information among women screened for breast cancer, and explore the role of public insurance in improving breast cancer outcomes. Innovative programs to advance gene-expression profiling (GEP) will be presented as part of the emerging technologies with the potential address cancer disparities.
Session Objectives: Identify predictors of breast cancer screening in racial and ethnic minority women Describe emerging technologies in personalized medicine that may improve delivery of breast cancer prevention and treatment to underserved populations
