Community Health Planning and Policy Development

The Community Health Planning and Policy Development section invites abstracts for scientific sessions and posters that address relevant and timely planning and policy themes and align with the theme of the 2013 APHA Annual Meeting: " Think Global, Act Local: Best Practices Around the World." Of particular interest are abstracts related to the following:
  • Achieving collective impact through interdisciplinary, interagency and other diverse partnerships
  • Best practices and lessons learned for increasing access to underserved populations
  • Best practices related to smart growth, urban form principals and intermodal networks
  • Bridging connections among clinical providers and community resources
  • Creating health equity: Going beyond the health gap, the mental health gap and the climate gap
  • Environmental strategies for climate change: Examining the politics, policies and economics
  • Establishing evidence for community health planning, policy and advocacy through approaches such as one health, health in all policies and comprehensive place-based initiatives
  • Ethics of research conducted in communities
  • Evaluating the implementation of health system reform
  • Implementation and evaluation of community planning tools and conceptual frameworks
  • Implementation and evaluation of innovative community based solutions to engage local people in their own solutions (Ex. Capacity Building, Community Participation and Advocacy, the Use of Microfinance, Time Banks, Community Re-Engagement and Connectivity)
  • Implementation strategies for adapting global tools, knowledge, and practices in local communities
  • Innovative research methodologies for small populations
  • Lessons learned about healthcare delivery and access from developing countries
  • Policies and strategies addressing the food environment as well as food quality, security, safety, and access
  • Public health impacts of international and internal migration
  • Public health impacts of war, genocide, civil unrest & violence
  • Recognizing and promoting health as a human right: What is the role of public health?
  • Standardized guildelines and successful strategies for the conduct of research in developing nations
  • Strategies for community health improvements from community members and activists
  • Strategies for reducing the impact of infectious diseases, improving immunization, and mitigating transmission
  • Strategies to improve immunization rates among vaccine-hesitant parents, individuals, and health care personnel
  • The impact of global policies on health locally
  • The impacts of social media on public health
  • The role of corporate and personalized medicine in shaping public health
  • The role of geographic information systems (GIS) in public health research and practice
  • The role of innovative technologies to improve sustainability and community health
Abstracts are limited to 250 words and   must include at least one measurable learning objective. Guidance for writing learning objectives can be found below in the Continuing Education section. Referrals to web pages or URLS may not be used for abstracts. Abstracts cannot be presented or published in any journal prior to the APHA Annual Meeting.

Any abstract requiring the use of film or video must be submitted to the Film and Technology Theater section, regardless of topic.

For any and all inquiries about your abstract, always reference the abstract number assigned to you by the APHA on-line system.

To present at the Annual Meeting, all presenters must be Individual members of APHA; must register for the meeting; and   must have completed a Conflict of Interest disclosure in advance of the Annual Meeting. 


Students & New Presenters

This section encourages students and those who have never presented at an APHA annual meeting, especially underrepresented groups, to become "new presenters" in 2013. Be sure to indicate your "new presenter" or "student" status when you submit your abstract on the web page. 

Continuing Education Accreditation

APHA values the ability to provide continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, health educators and those certified in public health. Please complete all required information when submitting an abstract so that members may receive CE credit for attending your session. These credits are necessary for members to keep their licenses and/or professional credentials.

For a session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credit, each presenter must provide:

1) an abstract free of trade and/or commercial product names

2) at least one MEASURABLE objective (DO NOT USE understand or to learn as objectives, they are not measureable).

Examples of Acceptable Measurable Action Words:
Explain, Demonstrate, Analyze, Formulate, Discuss, Compare, Differentiate, Describe, Name, Assess, Evaluate, Identify, Design, Define or List.

3) A signed Conflict of Interest (Disclosure) Form with a relevant Qualification Statement. See an example of an acceptable Qualification Statement on the online Disclosure Form.

Invited Sessions in the Community Health Planning and   Policy Development (CHPPD) Section

An invited is an oral scientific session of between four to five panelists on a related issue or multi-faceted project organized by a CHPPD section member. To propose an invited CHPPD session, the session organizer must a) be a member of APHA, b) have selected CHPPD as a section choice, c) and follow all steps listed below.

First, email Slande Celeste, Chair, and Khusdeep Malhotra, Co-Chair, CHPPD Program Planning Committee at slande@phhp.ufl.edu and kmalhotra@msm.edu with the invited session proposal.


If the Chair & Co-Chair deem that the topic of the proposed session aligns with the themes of the CHPPD program, please do the following:

  1. Submit each abstract individually through the on-line system no later than the Abstract due date.  Note each assigned abstract number following submission.
  2. E-mail the CHPPD Program Chair & Co-Chair the completed Proposal for  Invited Session Form:
  3. All abstracts will be considered as individual submissions. Consideration for the abstracts as a proposed session will occur after the individual review of abstracts. CHPPD does not generally accept full sessions related to a single project.

A proposed Invited session should not include more than 4 abstracts. A minimum of 3 abstracts for a proposed Invited session need to be accepted by the review process in order for  the Invited session to be scheduled. If less than 3 abstracts are accepted, then the accepted abstracts will be combined with other accepted abstracts to develop a different panel, roundtable or poster session.

Invited sessions and their component abstracts have the same deadline as individual abstracts submitted to the CHPPD section. There will be NO EXTENSIONS or alternate deadlines for proposed invited sessions.
