Grant writing for graduate students: Strategies for meaningful experience

Background. Grant writing is an valuable skill that can prepare graduate students for future professional activities. For public health students, opportunities can include supervised outreach projects and educational program grants as well as independent fellowships and dissertation proposals. Purpose. This paper reviews existing evidence of incorporating grant writing into training of future public health professionals, identifies ways to assess feasibility of potential projects for students' involvement and identifies opportunities for meaningful involvement of students in grant writing. Method. A structures literature review was performed using major educational and health promotion literature databases (MedLine, PhychINFO, ERIC, SocLit), supplemented by reference mining. Results. Proposed theoretical framework is based on Experiential Learning Theory and Devin's sensemaking/cognitive gap model. Discussion. The paper discusses future research questions and provides practical recommendations for academic program managers evaluating feasibility and place of graduate grant writing activities in public health educational programs.

I also work with 120 faculty in the Department of Pediatrics assisting them in grant writing and project management. I have presented at national meetings on research administration and coordinate a funded health communication grant where I am a co-investigator.
