Framing the discussion: Approaches to primary care integration of behavioral health services

This session will provide a general framework for understanding the accelerated efforts now underway to improve the US healthcare system by integrating mental health & substance use screening, assessment, treatment and care coordination as core components of routine primary care. The reasons for integrating behavioral health and primary care will be reviewed, along with a concise review of various integration models being applied in primary care settings. The core clinical functions of integrated care will be described, along with a discussion of things to consider when deciding the best approach for integration within various practice and community settings.
