Fall prevention: A view from the editor of arthritis care & research

Monday, November 4, 2013 : 12:40 p.m. - 12:50 p.m.

Marian Hannan, DSc, MPH, Institute for Aging Research, Hebrew Senior Life, and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA
Research on fall prevention has evolved over the years and this evolution has helped to drive public health policy, community action, and clinical practice. Advanced population health studies provide insight into the complex and multiple causes of falls in the elderly, thereby leading to future research and practical applications. For example, findings from MOBILIZE Boston study show that it is important to track falls both indoors and outdoors instead of combining the data into one group as was done traditionally. Thus research can transform future research and influence practice. As well, collaborations with multidisciplinary teams of investigators can help to quantify fall risk factors and trends in the elderly population. In this presentation, we will discuss why population based studies are important and what we can learn from them. In addition, from my view as a journal editor, I will discuss my observations in research trends and provide examples of how research can influences practices to prevent falls in the elderly.
