Monday, November 4, 2013 : 1:30 p.m. - 1:50 p.m.

Hortensia Amaro, PhD, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA
Career paths are not often linear or “predictable”. I will discuss my own experience as an immigrant and the conditions, individuals and historical context that contributed to my development as a scientist with an interest in health inequities and informing practice. This presentation touches on key topics such as the role of academic training, clarity about one's career inspirations and aspirations, discerning real opportunities from distractions, developing mentoring relationships, negotiating professional transitions, and the role of “ganas” in achieving career goals. The goal of my presentation is to highlight the importance of using our own and others' lived experience as a source of information, inspiration, curiosity, energy and agency.
