Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of the Global Health Institute is to assist students and emerging professionals in honing their leadership and core public health skills to effectively address global health concerns. The American Public Health Association conducted a needs assessment survey and identified a gap in public health professionals’ competency regarding global health practice strategies. Acknowledging this need for development this course will focus on strengthening the public health workforce, striving to equip rising professionals with the skills and knowledge base to work on global issues both domestically and abroad. This Institute will help participants translate public health concepts into practical “on the job” implications within an international context. Drawing from the global health competencies this course is designed to provide students with useful tools for their professional development. In return, they will be positioned to effectively employ health protection and promotion strategies. This course will also provide a forum for the exploration of new paradigms, and novel ways of approaching some of the complex and long-lasting issues related to improving public health globally. The faculty members for this course are keenly aware of APHA’s commitment to global heath. The lead faulty has over 30 years of experience helping to increase and develop capacities of diverse health professionals. Collectively they also have a wealth of expertise strengthening public health systems internationally. This course dovetails nicely with the Annual Meeting theme of, Think Global, Act Local, recognizing that the public health workforce needs to be aware of global health issues and be able to respond whether located in the US or abroad. Participants will be exposed to the fundamentals of the global health industry, and uncover how to effectively use their newly honed skill set to be an effective component of the global public health workforce. Overall this course combines experiential training with application of skills to help public health professionals acquire the expertise and knowledge to strengthen public health practice.
