Skateboarding-related injuries treated in US emergency departments, 1990-2008

Objective: To examine comprehensively the patterns and trends of pediatric skateboarding-related injuries in the United States.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted by using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for children and adolescents 5-19 years of age treated in emergency departments for an injuries associated with skateboards.

Results: An estimated 1 226 868 children (95% CI: 948 733—1 505 003) were treated in emergency departments for skateboarding-related injuries during the study period, an average of 68 159 cases per year.

Conclusions: Due to the continued popularity and participation in skateboarding, strict adherence to recommendations for helmet and protective equipment use is warranted. Skateboarding-related injuries continue to be an important source of injury for children and adolescents.
