Problem solving for better health nursing (PSBHN) in China: Leveraging the nursing workforce for sustainable health promotion efforts
Method PSBHN is an iterative, transformational process that begins with a workshop that teaches nurses at all levels and in differing settings the concepts and methodology necessary to engage the people they serve in the management of their own health. Innovative thinking that produces local, nurse-implemented solutions to real-world challenges using available resources and that involves an ever-enlarging circle of nurse and people is emphasized. Progress and outcomes are monitored quantitatively.
Results PSBHN fosters creative confidence and results in sustainable better health projects led by a nursing workforce, while producing a healthier and engaged population. The program has been applied in academic institutions, hospitals and communities in 14 cities across China and engaged more than 6,000 nurses in 4,000 PSBHN projects. Three nursing colleges have integrated PSBHN into their curricula. Some projects have received local financial support, expanding and coming to influence health policy. Best practices will be presented.
Conclusions PSBHN has demonstrated success in transforming nurses to assume a more active role in healthcare and to significantly improve the health of more citizens through collective efforts with other healthcare professionals.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I introduced the PSBH® program to China in 1989 and have worked to promote problem-solving skills among health professionals as a physician in over 30 countries around the world for 30 years. I’ve been actively involved in partnership and strategy development for the program in China. Education: BA, Harvard; PhD, molecular biology, MIT; and MD, Cornell. I am active in patient care and research and community outreach for health promotion and early disease detection.
