Initiation and first year outcomes of a collaborative rural health research center

Background: Rural communities have long struggled to overcome gaps in the availability of relevant programs and services that meet health promotion, quality of life, and health care service needs. There are numerous opportunities to conduct applied and participatory research that tests innovative approaches to improving rural health disparities. Description: This presentation provides an overview of the initiation and first year outcomes of the South Dakota Rural Health Research Center (RHRC). The Center is directed by a board-certified advanced public health nurse whose research focus is in rural and American Indian health disparities. Transdisciplinary academic collaborators include experts in statistics, health communications, Cooperative Extension Services, nutrition, exercise science, psychology, sociology, geography, ecology, nursing, pharmacy, human development, economics, physical and occupational therapy and others. Community partners include health services, allied health organizations, community service organizations, and schools. Lessons Learned: In year one, start-up funds were secured and three collaborative research seed grants were awarded. A community advisory board was established and additional funding was pursued. Monthly research seminars were offered and research support services were provided to community partners. Recommendations: Rural community partner organizations have research needs and interests that can be innovatively addressed in partnership with University scientists. A participatory approach that focuses on community health needs and community partner interests can lead to innovative research projects. Research infrastructure support for community partners is needed to assist with current data collection, data management, human subjects and other research resources.
